A man sentenced to six years for illegal land transaction |
September 20: The Thimphu District court has sentenced Nim Dorji from Langjophakha to six years in prison for illegally transferring land to his name.
Nim Dorji has also been found guilty of criminal conspiracy. According to court officials, about four years ago, Nim Dorji had bought a 15 decimal land at Langjophakha in Thimphu from a woman named Aum Gakimo.
Aum Gakimo owns two plots bearing number 24 and 39. Plot number 24 measures 45 decimals and the Plot number 39 measures 15 decimals.
The Department of Survey and Land Records, while transferring the land record and cadastral map to the Thimphu City Corporation, wrongly mentioned plot number 39 as having 45 decimals and plot number 24 as measuring 15 decimals.
According to the court verdict, Nim Dorji was aware of the mistake. With the help of Karma Tshering, the Survey Officer of the City Corporation, he regularized the land in his name.
After that he sold the land to four different people. One of the buyers was Karma Tshering the Survey Officer of the City Corporation. Karma Tshering is currently being tried for criminal conspiracy and accepting bribe in relation to the case by the Thimphu dzongkhag court.
Apart from the prison sentence, Nim Dorji also has to repay the money to three of the buyers. He has to deposit the money he was paid by the fourth buyer, Karma Tshering, the City Corporation official, to the government.
The land that has been illegally regularized in Nim Dorji’s Thram will be reinstated in Aum Gakimo’s Thram.
The Department of Survey and Land Records and the Thimphu City Corporation have been found guilty of negligence.
However no action has been taken against them because no specific charge has been filed against them. |
