September 06: The basic health unit in Kanglung, Trashigang has vaccinated 51 people against rabies after a calf in the locality died of suspected rabies.
11 people were vaccinated yesterday. They have all consumed dairy products. The calf belonged to a farmer in Kanglung.
A local resident said they have seen a suspected rabid dog bite the calf and run away.
The Dzongkhag Livestock Officer said the calf died of suspected rabies. But he said the risk of contacting rabies is not high if the dairy product has been boiled or cooked well.
More than 1,300 people have been vaccinated against rabies by the Tashigang hospital and the Kanglung BHU since 2005.
A single vaccine costs more than Nu. 300.
According to the assistant dzongkhag health officer, the Trashigang hospital alone spent about Nu. four million on the vaccines.
