November 19: Road Safety and Transport Authority officials, Traffic Police, Gups from three Gewogs and the taxi operators met in the capital to discuss the 24 hour taxi service in Thimphu.
The service will begin by the beginning of December.
According to the Taxi Tshogpa, they will identify certain places for the 24 hour service. The service will be in Motithang, the Hospital area, Begana Khasadrupchu, Dechenchholing and, Jongshina.
There will be a focal person in each area. Road Safety and Transport officials said if the 24 hour service is successful in Thimphu, the RSTA officials and the Taxi Tshogpa will look at provision of 24 hour service in other Dzongkhags .
Around 200 taxi operators attend the meeting. There are around 2,200 taxi operators in the Kingdom.
Harkha Tamang, the Joint director of RSTA said with the setting up of the 24 hour service, the demands of the customers during the night and emergencies will be met.
Speaking to BBS, taxi users welcome the news. They said currently it is difficult to get taxies in the night and the service would solve that problem.
