April 7: More than 13,000 people have subscribed for Tashi Cell, the first private mobile service, since its launch about a week ago.

The service was formally launched today by Her Royal Highness Ashi Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck in Thimphu yesterday.

Tashi Cell was launched by Tashi InfoComm which is owned by the Tashi Group of Companies.

For now the service is available only in the six western Dzongkhags of Thimphu, Paro, Haa, Chhukha, Wangduephodrang and Punakha. During the second phase, the service will be made available in the eastern dzongkhags.

Tashi Infocomm Limited has so far invested Nu. 925 million to establish the newtwork in six western dzongkhags. The cost is expected to increase when they start the second phase which will cover the eastern dzongkhags.
